Even brief time in the studio spent placing and looking can bring joy: for example, a chunk of concrete top of a figure wood construction: Stone Head
Bone Charm
A plastic sculpture I made 20 plus years ago, sat in a sunny window and recently it cracked. So sad, as I liked it a lot. But styles and artworks have a way of finding new homes and if that old favorite hadn’t cracked, I’d never have made this. So, new life to an old part and synapses off on a whole new direction of work! Stay tuned.

I will have 5 artworks on display with 7 other artists at Fitzgerald Studio. You are invited.
Brut Image Making
For this set of still life photographs: thinking of architecture as a kind of “image making” these constructions with their space, deep shadows, felt textures and human references are art as architecture creating an image. This series if for upcoming Artsy Exhibition.
Brain on Fire
During the pandemic and unemployed, time to make art was abundant. Any kind of art, from whatever, whenever! Sometimes the work seemed to be made by someone else. What happened? Sports psychologist on being in the zone, “The zone is simply a mental state of total focus in the present moment. We call this being “immersed” as it indicates you don’t worry about outcomes or are not distracted when you perform. You trust your skills and react without worry, doubt, or fear about results.” I realized I discovered the zone.
Confronting Demons
“Confront the dark parts of yourself, and work to banish them with illumination and forgiveness…”
August Wilson
This is a contemplation work: complexity, shifting perspectives, shadows and camouflage countered with yellow concrete x 4. Yellow a symbol of joy and energy and 4 representative of wholeness. Forgiveness = freedom = wholeness.
There Is No Script
For this month’s studio sculpture study installation, I couldn’t say it better than this: “Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn. They teach you there’s a boundary line to music. But, man, there’s no boundary line to art” – Charlie Parker
Mail Art
This layered, collaged and painted puzzle piece is my contribution to “We are all connected” mail art project. The surface is rough and not too refined for an emotive, human quality befitting the project title.
Three
Please support @fairshareartauctions earthquake relief fundraiser. My donation is a contemplative two sided painting “Three” of spiritual symbols. The reverse has Joss paper for remembrance and circle for prayer. All proceeds from my donation will go towards relief. Ends Feb 25th 2023

Crushed Cardboard Rough and Ready Rock
I chose one large hanging sculpture and four related fine art photographs to exhibit the New Jersey Armory Art Fair 14C. The bold character of these pieces come from the power of instinct and intuition, in the spirit of Art Brut. The expressive qualities of crushed, painted cardboard, rough concrete, rock and found objects draw inspiration from Dubuffet, Picasso and the Japanese aesthetic of imperfection. Strength, humor and brutal beauty springs from the unexpected juxtaposition of these rough and ready, raw materials.
Corrugated Cardboard, Poured Ink
Observations on two artworks for July 2022 Flushing Town Hall art exhibit
Ink Nº 8 and Surfaces Nº 3 are celebrations of the essence of materials, texture, form and space.
Ink Nº 8 looks freshly painted, as though the ink just hit the paper. While creating this painting I immediately recognized the spontaneity and perfection of the moment, how the ink exquisitely and freshly activated the page. I knew right then, the work was complete, needing no additional mark.
Surfaces Nº 3 started as a collage using corrugated cardboard and a cut up cereal box. The cardboard has a humble, warm and matter of fact quality and the box added a smooth splash of yellow – as in Ink Nº 8, the collage started with a regard and enjoyment of the materials. Working on many pieces simultaneously, I often put them aside for a time and come back later, with a fresher eye to evaluate. While I liked the collage, it called out for a modifier, a softening. I chose white paint, restyling the cardboard into more restrained, human and approachable work.

For the past 4 months a series of 3D assemblages and fine art photographs of assemblages have been my focus. The works are influenced by the stark bluntness of Brutalist architecture and an appreciation for the beauty and expressive qualities of the humble materials of rock, corrugated cardboard and concrete. The materials ability to shed identification of original use and take on human characteristics of passion, cruelty, sympathy and love, revealing and appreciating humanity in all its complex, terrifying and beautiful forms is what these works are about. They are the characters in my play.
